Why digitize a product?

When we talk about digitizing a product in 3D, it can sometimes sound like we’re simply talking about making a digital copy of it. But in practice, it goes quite a bit further than that.

A physical product has some obvious limitations: it has to be transported, handled, photographed, lit… and every time we need a new image or want to present it in a different context, we often have to start part of the process all over again.

When we have a good 3D model, that changes.

The product is no longer dependent exclusively on its physical version and also becomes a digital asset that we can reuse. We can generate new images, change viewpoints, modify the lighting, integrate it into virtual environments or prepare content for a campaign without needing to have the physical object in front of the camera again.

And this reusability is, in the end, probably one of the most interesting aspects.

For example, a piece of clothing, a pair of sneakers, a bottle or any product with geometry and materials that we want to preserve accurately. The first objective is to reproduce it well: shape, volume, textures, small details and even those imperfections that make the object look real.

From there, the model can have many lives.

It can appear in an advertising image today, become part of an animation tomorrow, or be used later in a catalogue, a presentation, an interactive experience or a project that had not even been planned when the product was digitized.

It doesn’t always make sense to digitize everything. But when a product needs to be shown many times, in different formats or over a long period of time, having a good 3D version can greatly simplify production.

It’s not just about turning a physical object into a 3D model; it’s about having the product available, too, when we no longer have it in front of us.
